The Palazzo Vescovile (Bishop’s Palace) in Portogruaro is enriched with art and culture thanks to the photo exhibitions “Paesaggi della litoranea veneta” (Landscapes of the Venetian coastline) and “Scatti dal GiraLagune” (Shots from the GiraLagune), organised by the Distretto Turistico Venezia Orientale (Eastern Venice Tourist District) for the summer of 2023.
These photo exhibitions offer the opportunity to visit Portogruaro’s landmark building built in 1586, immersing oneself, thanks to photographic shots, in the most natural and uncontaminated side of Eastern Venice: the one of its lagoons and of the Litoranea Veneta, the waterway connecting the Lagoon of Venice to the Gulf of Trieste.
Landscapes of the Venetian Coastline
The Litoranea Veneta represents a landscape to be known and valued, an ancient route that crosses the upper Adriatic coastline.
Today, this waterway connects the lagoons and rivers that flow from Venice to Trieste and, being located behind the coast, functions as a backbone for all cycling routes. The irreproducible peculiarities of this route are part of its fragilitỳ and the reason for its identitỳ.
The photographic exhibition Landscapes of the Venetian Coastline brings together the views of three photographers.
Stefano Ciol
Using a view from above, Stefano Ciol narrates the close relationship between the drained space and the morphology of nature, between the ages of geology and those of modernity, showing the cultivated land, canals, straight roads, fishing valleys and watercourses.
Edoardo Cuzzolin
Edoardo Cuzzolin’s photographic gaze rests on the ripples, the pauses, the small gashes, the cracks where water prevails, observing the junction lines between cultivated fields, the abandoned margins where the vegetation folds, and the gardens.
Francesco Finotto
A third point of view is that of Francesco Finotto, who documents the places of collective identity such as churches, new urban centres and the machines that allow managing water.
Shots from GiraLagune
The second photo exhibition at the Palazzo Vescovile during the summer of 2023 consists of fifteen photos, selected from the numerous shots from the ‘GiraLagune’ photo contest held in 2021.
The competition for amateurs, organised and curated by the Distretto Turistico Venezia Orientale (Eastern Venice Tourist District), invited participants to capture the uniqueness and importance of waterways, fishing valleys and lagoons, immortalising landscapes, flora, fauna and other characteristics and peculiarities, capable of narrating the beauty, history and uniqueness of these contexts.
The photos were examined and awarded prizes by a qualified jury, consisting of journalists, writers, communication and photographic language experts.
