After the intimate journey of the ‘Cavallini Sgarbi Collection’ and the dialogue between art and science, with ‘The Art of Physics. Da Luigi Russolo a Renzo Bergamo’, the Palazzo Vescovile in Portogruaro presents, from 8 October 2022 to 26 February 2023, the exhibition ‘L’Italia di Magnum. Da Robert Capa a Paolo Pellegrin’, an extraordinary union of over one hundred images that tell the chronicle, history, and customs of our country over the last 70 years.
The exhibition
A project that brings, for the first time in Portogruaro, the great photographers of the Magnum Photos photo agency, founded in New York City in 1947, an initiative of international scope that intends to promote and enhance the City of Portogruaro and the entire territory of Eastern Venice.
The exhibition presents itself to the visitor’s eyes as a tale of times gone by, bearing witness to events both large and small, personalities and places in Italy from the post-war period to the present day, in a fascinating interweaving of famous and lesser-known photographs, of world-famous places and ordinary citizens, which make up the social and visual fabric of our country.
The exhibition starts with two series signed by great masters of international photography, one by Robert Capa, dedicated to the end of the Second World War, showing a country in ruins, destroyed by five years of conflict, and one by David Seymour, who in 1947 filmed tourists returning to visit the Sistine Chapel: the eternal beauty of Italian art appearing as a sign of the rebirth of an entire nation.
Magnum’s Italy. From Robert Capa to Paolo Pellegrin continues as a story documenting the changes in Italy and Italians from 1947 to the 200s through the gaze, or rather, the lens, of photographers such as Elliott Erwitt, René Burri, Thomas Hoepker, Ferdinando Scianna, Thomas Dworzak, Paolo Pellegrin and many others.
It is Paolo Pellegrin himself who concludes this story, with images of the crowd thronging St. Peter’s Square at the vigil for the death of Pope John Paul II and those of another crowd, that of migrants on a barge.
