San Vito al Tagliamento: frescoes and food-and-wine culture

Affreschi San Vito Al Tagliamento

Keep exploring the Eastern Venice area with Europa Tourist Group!

After having collected lots of positive feedback from our guests about the day trip to the nearby city of Portogruaro and the boat ride in Bibione’s lagoon aboard the typical “Burcio”, we decided to further expand our rapidly growing schedule of exciting excursions branded #ETGroupHolidays.

The new excursion will be available starting from December 2020, and will take our guests on a discovery trip to the city of San Vito al Tagliamento: an ancient town in-between Venice and Udine which today shows an enviable display of well-preserved arts and history.

Antico Ospedale San Vito al Tagliamento

An artistically crafted afternoon

The new day trip to San Vito al Tagliamento is ideal for those who wish to spend an alternative Saturday afternoon, surrounded by the stunning setting of a medieval town which today is experiencing a second flourishing, thanks to the restoration and re-opening to the public of those buildings that made its history.

You will leave Bibione by bus or shuttle in the early afternoon, and on arrival in San Vito al Tagliamento you will meet up with a multilingual tour guide.
A short walk will lead you to the town’s historical centre, starting with Piazza del Popolo, a square from the 1500’s which is surrounded by the old Loggia Pubblica – first ever seat of the municipality, the Cathedral and the beautiful Town Hall.

The Ancient Theatre of San Vito

You will then visit the Loggia Pubblica, which since the 1700’s has been home to the Antico Teatro Sociale (Old Social Theatre) dedicated to Gian Giacomo Arrigoni. The theatre, which clearly draws inspiration from “La Fenice” – Venice’s most famous theatre, has been recently re-built anew, a faithful replica of the original down to the tiniest details.
The restoration of the Antico Teatro has made it possible for this hidden gem of Eastern Venice to be back onto the scenes, with a brand new, exciting calender of events.

The castle and the sacred places

Next is a visit to San Vito’s castle (Castello di San Vito), which used to be the seat of Aquileia’s patriarchate and residence to some local noble families. The part of the castle which you can visit nowadays once served as housing for the nobles, a cluster of buildings some of which have been restored.
Inside you will find numerous frescoes from different ages and painted with different techniques; also, some interesting decorations from the 1400’s and 1700’s which depict the coat of arms of the noble families of San Vito and Friuli, along some chivalry scenes.

The guided tour continues on to the Chiesa dell’Annunziata church, which hosts an entire cycle of frescoes from the second half of the 14th Century; the church known as Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Battuti, home to another cycle of frescoes by local artist P. Amalteo; and the Antico Ospedale della Confraternita di Santa Maria dei Battuti, an ancient hospital from 1369 which today serves as exhibition area.

The history of our land in one glass

Once the guided tour to the historical centre of San Vito Al Tagliamento draws to a close, you will move on to the renowned wine cellar “Principi di Porcia”.
This particular cellar – an institution for our community, can boast an eight-century long history of wine-making excellence, with the new generations holding the torch for the previous ones while introducing state-of-the-art agricultural technologies and techniques, resulting today in a high-quality, ethic and sustainable product.

You will then proceed to a tasting of some of the top ranking wines the cellar can offer, true staples of Friulian wine-making tradition.
